Branson West & Reeds Spring, Missouri

Gateway towns to Table Rock Lake's western shore and Silver Dollar City. Here's a local look at what makes Branson West and Reeds Spring worth visiting, and worth investing in.

History

Reeds Spring takes its name from Fitzhugh Reed, who settled at a spring near the original town site and ran a farm called Reed's Springs before the community was officially organized in 1906. The town came to life with construction of the White River Railway, a project so ambitious it required boring an 18-foot-high, 24-foot-wide tunnel through solid Ozark rock to connect Reeds Spring to Taney County, a four-year effort that took roughly 250 workers along with steam drills and dynamite to complete.

Reeds Spring became a genuine boomtown, first as one of the country's leading railroad-tie centers, then, after the timber ran out around 1915, as a tomato-canning hub with two canning factories in operation. A garment plant arrived in 1945 and employed 250 workers at its peak. A 1965 flood damaged part of town and the last factory closed in 1968, but Reeds Spring has since grown again as a residential and tourism community, with a 2020 population of 1,136.

Just a few miles away, Branson West has a shorter but no less colorful history. Originally called Linchpin and then Lakeview, the crossroads town at the junction of Highways 13 and 76 officially adopted the name Branson West in 1992, aiming to capitalize on its rapidly growing neighbor. The strategy worked, at least at first: the population nearly quadrupled from 37 to 408 residents between 1990 and 2000, though growth has since leveled off. Today Branson West is home to about 484 residents and its own general-aviation airport, Branson West Municipal Airport, also known as Emerson Field.

Entertainment

Both towns sit just minutes from Silver Dollar City, the 1880s-themed amusement park built around Marvel Cave on the Indian Point peninsula of Table Rock Lake. Marvel Cave first opened as a tourist attraction back in 1894, and the Herschend family built the theme park around its entrance when Silver Dollar City opened on May 1, 1960, drawing more than 125,000 visitors in its first year alone. Marvel Cave remains a National Natural Landmark and one of the park's original attractions.
